For the Boomer generation, there’s now an important new rallying cry: fit not fat!

The Baby Boomers will live longer than any generation in history, but they are also facing unprecedented health issues that have resulted from lifestyle choices made in their 30’s and 40’s.

That’s because a disproportionate number of Boomers suffer from obesity. According to some surveys, nearly 4 in 10 Boomers are obese – an increase of more than 10 percent in just over a decade.

The problem is even worse among older Boomers. According to a 2010 report from the U.S. Census Bureau, the vast majority of Baby Boomers age 65 and older must now confront the problem of obesity. In fact, 72 percent of older men and 67 percent of older women are overweight or obese.

More disturbingly, all that weight gain is accentuating the trend toward chronic diseases such as high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes. According to a survey from West Virginia University School of Medicine, the number of Boomers who have high cholesterol has more than doubled compared to the previous generation. And chronic disease such as diabetes is dramatically on the rise.

It almost sounds paradoxical, but even as Boomers have been better informed about health and diet issues than any previous generation, they may turn out to be the sickest generation. And it’s not just a matter of how they look in the mirror – the U.S. Census Bureau also points out that these Baby Boomers aren’t financially ready to pay for long-term health costs resulting from weight-induced chronic disease.

Fit Not Fat: Good for Your Finances Too!

In short, health issues are now pocketbook issues. Becoming Fit not Fat is going to be essential for financial security as boomers live longer.

And that’s led to a franker discussion of diet and exercise issues. For one, exercise is no longer seen as a way to put on muscle, achieve sleek supermodel curves or prepare for competitive athletic events.

Exercise is seen as an important preventative mechanism against chronic disease. That’s because exercise is now seen as a daily health and wellness choice that leads to fitter and healthier bodies, and lower health costs.

And that’s led to a fundamental change in mindset for Boomers as they go about creating new fitness and wellness regimens. These usually include the introduction of low-impact exercises, changes in diet and long-term targets for fitness goals.

Those trends are leading to Boomers embracing the home gym. For Boomers, there are many benefits to all-in-one home gyms. For one, they are customizable in a wide range of ways, making them perfect for creating a personalized routine. And they don’t require heavy weights. Some all-in-one home gyms, for example, don’t even use weight stacks – they use resistance bands. For Baby Boomers concerned about aging joints and bones, they allow the creation of low-intensity exercises.

For Boomers concerned about their health, getting fit at home in their own home gym is becoming part of their broader mission of achieving better health and wellness. It’s easier to schedule than going to the gym, and easier to create a routine that’s more about toning and fitness.

  1. At age 68 I fall in that older men category and that is shocking to learn 72 percent of us are overweight or obese. But I know it doesn’t have to be that way. I have been going to several of the senior games track meets and it is amazing what some of the age 80+ men and women are doing.

    1. Good for you Robert. I hope you find the fitness activity and routine that works for you. It doesn’t have to be demanding, just intense at times and reasonably regular.
